Abstract:
While probability theory is traditionally based on measure theory and Kolmogorov's axioms as a foundation, the recently proposed formalism of Markov categories constitutes a potential alternative approach in which a (modest) number of classical theorems of probability and statistics have already been reproduced and generalized. In this talk, I will introduce this approach and illustrate its utility by providing a statement and proof of the classical de Finetti theorem in entirely abstract categorical terms without measure theory. Based on joint work with Tomáš Gonda, Paolo Perrone and Eigil Rischel.
